John Steiger and his sons, Douglas and Maurice, were successful farmers near Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. They needed a larger tractor in their farming operation that was not available commercially. They built the first STEIGER tractor in their barn on the Steiger farm during the winter of 1957.
n 1963, the Steigers became serious about building tractors and designed a series of units for sale. Douglas Steiger served as the chief designer while Maurice Steiger headed production. A marketing agent, Earl Christensen, was assigned in Elbow Lake, Minnesota. Earl later became one of the first STEIGER dealers.
The Steiger’s began building tractors full time in 1963 in their family farm barn. In 1969 STEIGER began building Series I tractors in a large factory in Fargo, ND. Series II, III, IV and 1000 followed through the 1970’s and 1980’s. On November 12, 1986 Tenneco the parent company of J.I. Case acquired STEIGER Tractor Inc. and soon red Case International 4wds were rolling out of Fargo, ND tractor factory.
